Skincare Key Ingredients: Unlocking the Power of Vitamin C, Retinol, AHAs and BHAs, Niacinamide, Hyaluronic Acid, and SPF

When it comes to skincare, navigating through the vast array of products and ingredients can be overwhelming. However, among the myriad options, certain key ingredients have gained remarkable popularity for their transformative effects on the skin. In this comprehensive guide, we will unveil the secrets behind some of the most prized skincare key ingredients: Vitamin C, Retinol, AHAs and BHAs, Niacinamide, Hyaluronic Acid, and SPF.

Each of these ingredients comes with its unique set of benefits and properties, making them essential components of a well-rounded skincare routine. Whether you’re aiming to brighten your complexion, combat signs of aging, improve texture, or protect your skin from harmful UV rays, understanding what these ingredients are capable of can significantly elevate your skincare game.

Get ready to unlock the secrets that will help you achieve healthy, radiant-looking skin that truly glows from within.

The Key Players

Vitamin C

The first of our skincare key ingredients is of course, Vitamin C. Vitamin C, AKA ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin that is essential for the growth, development, and repair of body tissues. It is also a potent antioxidant that helps protect the skin from free radicals and oxidative stress.

Using Vitamin C in your morning skincare routine has several benefits. Firstly, it helps to improve the appearance of the skin by promoting collagen synthesis. Collagen is a protein that provides structure and elasticity to the skin, and its production decreases as we age. Vitamin C stimulates collagen production, helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and giving the skin a more youthful and firm appearance[2].

Secondly, Vitamin C has brightening properties, making it effective in reducing the appearance of dark spots and hyperpigmentation. It inhibits the production of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color, resulting in a more even skin tone[3].

Lastly, Vitamin C has protective properties against sun damage. It helps to neutralize free radicals caused by exposure to UV radiation, preventing oxidative damage and reducing the risk of skin aging and sunburn[4].

Including Vitamin C in your morning skincare routine can help nourish and protect your skin, resulting in a healthier and more radiant complexion. However, it’s important to note that Vitamin C is sensitive to light and air, so it’s crucial to choose a stable form of Vitamin C and store it properly to maintain its effectiveness.

Retinol

Retinol is a form of vitamin A that is commonly used in skincare products, known for its various benefits when included in an evening skincare routine.

This key ingredient helps stimulate cell turnover, which can improve the texture and tone of the skin. It also promotes collagen production, which can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Retinol is effective in addressing multiple skin care concerns, including acne, hyperpigmentation, and uneven skin tone. Also, it can help fade dark spots, even out discoloration, and improve overall skin clarity. It’s definitely one of the most important skincare key ingredients to incorporate into your routine.

Retinol is often recommended for use in the evening because it can make the skin more sensitive to sunlight. Applying it at night allows for maximum absorption and effectiveness without the potential of daytime sun exposure.

It’s worth noting that retinol may cause some initial skin irritation or sensitivity, so it’s important to start with a low concentration and gradually increase usage as tolerated. Additionally, using sunscreen during the day is crucial when incorporating retinol into your evening skincare routine to protect the skin from potential sun damage.

Please note that it’s always best to consult with a dermatologist or skincare professional for personalized advice on incorporating retinol into your skincare routine.

AHAs and BHAs

AHAs and BHAs are types of chemical exfoliants that can be beneficial to include in an evening skincare routine.

Alpha hydroxy acids, or AHAs, are a group of acids that include glycolic acid, lactic acid, and citric acid, among others. They work by exfoliating the top layers of the skin, promoting cell turnover, and helping to minimize dullness and uneven texture2. Some AHAs, such as glycolic acid, can also stimulate collagen production, while others have antioxidant and hydrating properties1. AHAs are often used to address concerns such as hyperpigmentation, fine lines, and uneven skin tone.

BHAs, or beta hydroxy acids, mainly refer to salicylic acid. BHAs are oil-soluble and have the ability to penetrate deep into the pores, making them effective in treating acne and blackheads3. They have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, making them ideal for oily or acne-prone skin23. BHAs help to exfoliate the skin, remove impurities from the pores, and reduce inflammation.

Using AHAs and BHAs in your evening skincare routine can be beneficial because it allows these exfoliants to work overnight, when the skin is in its repair and renewal mode. The exfoliation provided by AHAs and BHAs can help to improve the texture of the skin, minimize dullness, even out the skin tone, and reduce the appearance of acne and blackheads. However, it’s important to note that AHAs and BHAs can increase the skin’s sensitivity to the sun, so it’s crucial to apply sunscreen during the day when using these exfoliants.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide is a water-soluble form of vitamin B31. It offers several benefits for the skin when used in the evening skincare routine. Here are a few reasons why niacinamide is good to use in your evening skincare routine:

Antioxidant properties: Niacinamide acts as an antioxidant, helping to protect the skin from the damaging effects of free radicals12. This can help prevent signs of premature aging, such as wrinkles and fine lines.

Improves skin barrier function: Niacinamide helps strengthen the skin’s natural barrier1. It promotes the production of ceramides, lipids that help retain moisture in the skin and protect it from external irritants. By improving the skin barrier function, niacinamide can help reduce dryness, sensitivity, and inflammation.

Reduces hyperpigmentation and dark spots: Niacinamide has been found to inhibit the transfer of melanin, the pigment responsible for dark spots and hyperpigmentation. Regular use of niacinamide in the evening skincare routine can help fade dark spots and even out the skin tone.

Regulates sebum production: For those with oily or acne-prone skin, niacinamide can be beneficial as it helps regulate sebum production. By controlling excess oil production, it can minimize the appearance of acne and reduce the likelihood of clogged pores.

Hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a molecule naturally found in the body that helps keep a balance of water and hydrate the skin. It can be used in both morning and evening skincare routines because of its hydrating properties. HA can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water, making it a powerful hydrating ingredient for the skin and one of the more important skincare key ingredients.

Hydration: Hyaluronic acid helps hydrate the skin and keep it moisturized throughout the day^[2]1. It helps the skin hold onto water, keeping it plump and supple.

Boosts skin elasticity: HA can boost skin elasticity, making the skin look and feel firmer.

Helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles: Hydrating the skin with hyaluronic acid can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Lightweight and easy to wear: hyaluronic acid is a lightweight ingredient and won’t feel heavy on the skin. It’s easily absorbed, making it a great base for makeup or sunscreen in the mornings.

It’s important to remember that using HA alone may not be enough and it’s essential to note that it should be added to your moisturizer or skincare routine.

SPF

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, and it refers to the level of protection a sunscreen provides against the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. This key ingredient primarily protects the skin from the damaging effects of the sun, such as sunburn, skin aging, and the risk of skin cancer.

Incorporating SPF into your morning skincare routine is crucial for several reasons:

Protection against skin cancer: Regular use of sunscreen with a sufficient SPF can help reduce the risk of developing skin cancer. Sun exposure is a major contributor to skin cancer, and using SPF acts as a barrier between your skin and the sun’s harmful UV radiation.

Prevention of premature aging: The sun’s UV rays can accelerate the aging process by causing wrinkles, fine lines, and age spots. SPF helps to shield the skin from these damaging effects and maintain a youthful appearance.

Prevention of sunburn: SPF protects the skin from sunburn, which is a visible sign of UV damage. Sunburn can cause immediate discomfort and redness, and frequent sunburns can lead to long-term skin damage.

Protection against pigmentation and dark spots: Sun exposure can cause hyperpigmentation, leading to the development of dark spots and uneven skin tone. Using SPF daily can help prevent the formation of these pigmented areas and maintain a more even complexion.

It’s important to note that sun exposure can occur even on cloudy days or through windows, so wearing SPF every day, including during your morning skincare routine, is essential for comprehensive protection. Remember to choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays and has a minimum SPF of 30 or higher for optimal sun protection. Conclusion

In conclusion, understanding and incorporating key skincare ingredients like Vitamin C, Retinol, AHAs and BHAs, Niacinamide, Hyaluronic Acid, and SPF can truly transform your skin. Each ingredient possesses unique properties and benefits that address specific skin concerns, allowing you to tailor your skincare routine to meet your individual needs.

Please keep in mind that it’s essential to consult with a dermatologist or skincare professional for personalized advice on incorporating retinol and AHAs into your skincare routine.

Style beyond age and Colleen Rothschild Beauty Products

Let’s explore the benefits of using Colleen Rothschild beauty products in your skincare routine and guide you through the correct order of application for optimal results. We will also delve into key ingredients, such as Vitamin C and Glycolic Acid, and explain why they are crucial for maintaining youthful and radiant skin.

To Cleanse or not to Cleanse?!

There are differing opinions on whether or not you need to wash your face in the morning if you have already washed and prepped your skin the night before. It is a matter of personal preference really. Some Doctors recommend just a rinse and others maintain the opinion that you should use a gentle cleanser in the morning.

Cleaners

If you do choose to wash in the morning you may want to try a  gentle cleanser like Colleen Rothschild’s Radiant Cleansing Balm. This particular cleaner is so luxe, that it leaves your skin renewed and glowing. If a rinse is more your thing you can try a toner like CR’s Matcha Tea Treatment Toner or a simple rise of water.

Ice Bath Facial

I personally like the idea of waking up in the morning with an ice bath facial. We’ve talked about the benefits of ice baths for your whole body, but starting your day with an ice bath for your face is an exhilarating way to start your day. If you want to step it up a little bit more you can make your ice cubes with green tea or aloe vera depending on what your skin calls for.

Morning Skincare Routine:

Cleanse: Start with the Radiant Cleansing Balm to remove impurities and makeup.

Vitamin C: Apply a few drops of the Vitamin C Brightening Serum to your face and neck. Gently pressing it into the skin.

Hyaluronic Acid: Follow with the Hyaluronic Acid serum, massaging it into your skin to boost hydration.

SPF: Finish off by applying the Triple Defense Sunscreen Broad-Spectrum SPF 40 sunscreen to protect against harmful UV rays.

Evening Skincare Routine:

Skincare for youthful and radiant skin

Cleanse: Be sure to thoroughly cleanse your face in the evening. My esthetician recommends DOUBLE cleansing at night to be sure your face is squeaky clean before applying your evening products. We like Balancing Gel Cleanser to make sure all of the day’s impurities are removed.

Hyaluronic Acid: Apply the Hyaluronic Acid serum to hydrate and plump your skin.

AHAs or Retinol: Glycolic Acid Peel Pads with Blue Agave. Gently sweep one peel pad across your face, neck, and décolleté to exfoliate and promote cell turnover.

Niacinamide: Finish by applying Extreme Recovery Cream to improve skin elasticity, minimize pores, and even out skin tone.

Conclusion:

By incorporating Colleen Rothschild beauty products into your skincare routine, you can achieve radiant and youthful skin. Remember to follow the correct order of application! Focus on key ingredients like Vitamin C, Glycolic Acid, Hyaluronic Acid, and Niacinamide for ultimate anti-aging results. Also remember, consistency is key. The Best Sunblocks for Skin over 50

The Best Sunblocks for Skin over 50

We are in the midst of another warm summer season, so now it’s more important than ever to apply sunblock every single day. So today I’m going to share with you my choices for the best sunblocks for skin over 50. The history of sunblock dates back to Ancient Greece. In fact, the Greeks were some of the first people to use natural oils and herbs to protect their skin from the sun. And over 2,000 years later, we’re still using sunscreen to keep our skin healthy!

Did you know that sunblock was invented by accident?

We all know that sunscreen is critical for protecting our skin from the sun’s harmful rays, but how exactly was it invented? Surprisingly, the answer isn’t quite clear. Some experts say that it was originally developed by Polish scientists in the 1930s, while others claim that Australian researchers came up with the idea in the 1940s. What we do know for sure is that sunblock has come a long way since those early days. There are now plenty of different brands and varieties to choose from. So what’s the best sunblock for you? Read on to find out!

Did you know that one in five women will develop skin cancer in their lifetime? The best way to avoid this is to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays. But how do you know which sunblock is right for you? Here are some tips on what to look for when choosing the best sunblock.

Dallas blogger wearing white kafta posing with a friend in a black top and brown skirt

When it comes to sunblock, all skin types are not created equal. If you have mature skin, you need a sunblock that will provide both UVA and UVB protection while hydrating your skin. One of the most important things to look for on the label is “broad spectrum”. This indicates that the sunscreen protects against ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB). Plus it’s also important to look for the SPF rating, which indicates how well it protects against UVB

Sunscreen vs Sunblock

You can get your sun protection as either sunscreen or sunblock. Each one works differently to do essentially the same thing.

Mineral sunblock sits on the skin and reflects light away. Only two types of physical sunblocks have been FDA-approved—zinc oxide and titanium dioxide—and both might be good options for your skin type. A mineral sunscreen may be a good choice for you if you have sensitive skin because it tends to be more gentle and therefore less likely to cause negative skin reactions.

A chemical sunscreen limits sun damage by using various chemicals. They work by absorbing UV rays into the tissue, and when ultraviolet rays pass into the skin, they change the rays into a longer wavelength which is less harmful and not so damaging.

The Best Sunblocks for Your Face

When it comes to my face, I have made very specific choices. I, of course, want the product to go on smoothly and without any residue. For that I chose
Anthelios AOX by LaRoche-Posay. I found mine at Blue Mercury or you can also purchase it online at The Skin Store. When it comes to a quick touch up I use Murad Hydration Invisiblur Perfecting Shield, I prefer a matte finish, not shiny skin.

Various Susan Posnick cosmetics displayed on white towel

I’m always light on makeup but when I do use it, I ensure that it’s also a sunblock. My favorite option is color flow by Susan Posnick Cosmetics. It’s 100% vegan, gluten-free, paraben-free, silicone-free, and cruelty-free and comes in 12 flawless colors. There are many options when it comes to protecting the sensitive skin on your face, but one area that is often forgotten about is your lips. Be sure to apply a daily lip SPF that will protect and nourish your lips, and you can even get some that are tinted.

Don’t forget to always keep sunblock in the car. It’s practical and important to keep on hand but unfortunately can also make quite a mess. So the perfect solution to that unpleasant problem is to choose a stick instead. This one by Shiseido is my favorite, it’s ocean-friendly, lightweight, and water-resistant for up to 80 minutes. Interestingly, I learned all about it during an eyebrow microblading appointment. For more information on microblading, check out my post here.

Clothing for Sun Protection

Dallas blogger laying on lounge chair wearing Lotta Stensson kafta, Eric Javits Hat and Ray Ban sunglasses

Let’s not forget about another effective method of skin protection, your clothing. Let style be your guide and don a great SPF hat like this one by Eric Javits. I paired mine with my favorite Ray Ban sunglasses and finished off my safe summer look with a gorgeous Lotta Stensson design kaftan. Most clothing will provide some protection from the sun, but to be safe choose items that have an SPF rating or provide the most coverage.

Protecting your skin is extremely important, but unfortunately, it’s not something that a lot of people prioritize. Be sure to keep it in mind as you go on with your day. With my tips and tricks, it will be an effortless task that you won’t think twice about. Spend the extra seconds to apply your favorite sunblock and take care of your beautiful skin.

How to Rejuvenate Your Body

How to Rejuvenate Your Body

Self care has become an overused word in my opinion. To some it conjures up images of indulgence. To others it opens up a path to growth. I like to use the word rejuvenate instead.

Every evening when possible I like to enjoy a soothing, relaxing bath. I take a shower while the tub is filling up I light some candles settle into the warm water and live for a while in the silence.

My New Years goals started with the aid of this wonderful Salt bath salts

Pure Dharma Nourishing Botanicals can help heal and renew the body and rejuvenate the soul. From healing bath salts to the CBD oil I apply to my face every morning when I wake up. This Glow CBD Activated Oil Serum adds an instant glow that lasts all day. It is rich in stem cells and Vitamin C to brighten and tighten the skin.

Years ago, I wrote a blog about an “adventure” I had always wanted to take. Floatation Therapy. If you have one close by consider trying it. Floating in the dark silence for an hour might sound daunting…..

A friend of mine said she ran out of things to think about, which of course is the point!

Consider getting in a Floatation Tank Floatation Tank at least once. You just might turn it into a habit to improve your self care.

Have fun with it.

Opte Precision Skincare- The Future of Beauty

Opte Precision Skincare- The Future of Beauty

As you might know, I have been visiting the dermatologist to treat the dark spots and hyperpigmentation on my face and chest for a long time. So when the OPTE came on the market, I was curious to say the least. The OPTE Precision System was developed over 10 years and 500,000 hours to reveal the natural beauty of our skin, while being clean, cruelty free, and using the best quality ingredients.

How can an at-home system target and diminish dark spots? This state-of-the-art system scans your face for tonal differences in pigmentation and detects it using their patented Precision Skincare algorithm. Then OPTE applies an Optimizing Serum to instantly correct and, with continued use, fade and prevent dark spots.

I don’t mind telling you that when I first opened the OPTE machine, I was a little intimidated. But after two uses, I was lightly scanning the wand over my face like a pro. Now, every morning and evening, I scan my face with the wand to treat the dark spots and target my hyperpigmentation with the Optimizing Serum, powered by 5% niacinamide and advanced mineral pigments. These pigments are shade inclusive for 98% of all skin tones, and is beneficial in the morning since the wand delivers the serum and covers my dark spots just like a concealer. It is quick and easy to use, especially since I don’t take the time to put on makeup.

The Serum is formulated in Japan without sulfates, parabens, dyes, phthalates, or fragrance.

The pictures below show the instant results of one pass with the wand, which glides smoothly across your skin, targets hyperpigmentation, and delivers optimizing serum right on your dark spot. Gone are the days of trying to target and color match your skin with over-the-counter concealers.

My journey with OPTE is one that I will be continuing. This system gives a great at-home precision skincare alternative to the more expensive laser treatments. The combination of treatment and an instant airbrushed look elevates OPTE in the future of skincare.

Hats off to OPTE!

Try it for yourself.

Losing Hair, Muscle Mass, and Skin Elasticity? Try Collagen Loading!

Losing Hair, Muscle Mass, and Skin Elasticity? Try Collagen Loading!

Are you losing hair, muscle mass and skin elasticity?? If so, collagen loading could help you!

What is Collagen?

Collagen is a protein that is a main building block of your skin, hair, muscles, cartilage, and ligaments. I have been mixing it into my coffee for years. Just one scoop and you get frothy coffee with extra benefits.

Are You Losing Hair, Muscle Mass and Elasticity?? Collagen Loading Could Help You!

As we age, we naturally start losing skin elasticity, bone density, muscle mass and of course, hair loss becomes a problem. Collagen, being a naturally-produced nutrient in our body starts to decline after the age of 25. As collagen production declines, fine lines become apparent, our hair starts to fall, and our bones weaken.

To look and feel more youthful we can take collagen supplements and practice what’s called ‘collagen loading.’

Are You Losing Hair, Muscle Mass and Elasticity?? Collagen Loading Could Help You!

What is Collagen Loading?

Collagen loading is when you increase your collagen levels over a short period of time. All you need to do is multiply your daily collagen intake through supplements. So, the goal is getting 2-3 times the serving of collagen supplements into your daily routine for 2 – 3 weeks.

You can go the natural route and include more collagen-boosting foods into your diet such as chicken, fish, bone broth, citrus fruits, and leafy greens. However, you won’t be able to get the amount your body needs through food alone.

Are You Losing Hair, Muscle Mass and Elasticity?? Collagen Loading Could Help You!

You can find all sorts of collagen supplements in your health food store but as with everything else,  quality is key. When I first started putting a scoop in my coffee, I used Dr. Axe. It was one of the first reels I posted on my Instagram account. Now, Dr. Axe has a line called Ancient Nutrition so for three weeks of collagen loading I am using his supplements.

How can I get more Collagen into my Diet?

For joint support, gut support and beauty support, Ancient Nutrition offers a variety of high quality collagen supplements. You can pour 2-3 scoops of it in tea or coffee and even a sparkling drink. You can even make a superfood smoothie with the Multi Collagen Protein Ancient Nutrition offers.

An easy way to practice collagen loading to retain muscle mass, grow healthy hair, and reduce wrinkles is by adding it to the drinks you consume throughout the day.

When you feel good everything else falls into balance. Try collagen loading out. It might be just what you need.

3 Hair Mask Application Tips

1 – I find hair masks work best when applied to clean, towel-dried hair that´s still damp.

2 – Apply the mask and wrap your hair – the added heat helps those active ingredients get to work.

3 – Once your hair is wrapped, turn up the heat and warm it with your hairdryer for a few minutes, to get those active ingredients started even faster.

How does your hair change with the seasons and which hair mask will you try?

I hope you enjoy this share. Until the next time, you might enjoy….

10 Rules to Even Self Tan Application

10 Rules to Even Self Tan Application

From skin preparation through to applying and preserving your tan. Here are 10 rules to even self-tan application that everyone needs to know.

It´s no secret that I enjoy a good glow.  Applying self-tanner allows me to achieve a sun-kissed look any time of the year, without the harmful UV rays damaging my skin. There are a few potential stumbling blocks though, so today on the Style Beyond Age blog, I´m sharing my top tips to achieve an even and natural-looking self-tan.

10 Rules to Even Self-Tan Application

1 – Leave Self-Tanning until Last

Self-Tanning should be the last step in your self-care routine. If you’re planning on getting a manicure, shaving, or waxing, make sure it´s all taken care of before you start your application. These treatments will remove your self-tan and we don´t want you going to all this effort for nothing.

2 – Exfoliate your Body before Applying Self Tan

Self-tan and dry skin do not mix, so exfoliating your body is a crucial step in the application process. I like to use my exfoliating body mitt in the shower, paying particular attention to the heels, ankles, knees and elbows. A back exfoliator is also handy, for those hard-to-reach places.

3  – Exfoliate your Face before applying self-tan

Like your body, your face also requires TLC before self-tan application. I use a facial exfoliating mitt, which is much kinder to your delicate facial skin than the alternative mitt for your body. Methode Brigitte Kettner also has a gentle, yet effective exfoliating tool, that I have been using for years on my face.

4 – Dry Fully Before Applying the Product

After washing and exfoliating, allow yourself time to dry completely before moving onto the next stage. I recommend waiting fifteen minutes once you´re out of the shower. It sounds like a small step, but it can make a big difference, don´t be tempted to rush ahead. A great towel helps with patience. This is my favorite, an oversized lightweight Italian waffle weave towel.

5 – Moisturize your Skin

Once you´re fully dry, but before the self-tan is applied, we need to add some moisture back into the skin. I like to use Cetaphil Moisturizer cream around my knees, ankles and elbows to avoid these areas taking on a darker shade. For my face, I choose Perricone MD and pay special attention to my nostrils, eyebrows and hairline.

6  – From the Bottom to the Top

When applying self-tanner, we work from the bottom to the top. Starting with the feet and legs, moving onto the body, and finally applying to your face.

When applying the self-tan, avoid using your hands. Our hands move the product around the skin too much and often leave us looking sad and streaky, instead use a mitt like this one from Best Bronze for the most even results.

7  – Applying to your Face

Less is more when it comes to applying self-tan to your face. I sparingly dab the self-tanner on the areas of my face that would naturally catch the sun. Focus on your forehead, cheek bones and around your nose, then gently spread the product out towards your hairline and the edges of your face, to achieve a natural look.

8  – Extend the recommended drying time

For the best self-tan results, extend the recommended drying time of the product. If product guidelines recommend ten minutes, allow for twenty and you won´t be in for any nasty surprise streaks.

9  – Tidy Up Problem Areas

If you have messed up, there are ways to rectify things. Some say rubbing a lemon on the area will remove streaks. For those streaks that a lemon can´t budge, soak the area in warm water and oil to remove the tanner, before applying again.

10 – Preserve your Tan

Now that you’ve gone to all this effort, we want your tan to last. Keeping your skin moisturized, washing gently in the shower and minimal exfoliation will help to preserve your tan and keep it looking good for longer.

I hope you enjoyed these 10 rules to even self-tan application.

Here are 5 face yoga exercises to combat the signs of aging, that you can try at home.

Queue the funny faces…

What is Face Yoga

Face yoga is a natural alternative to procedures like facelifts and Botox. It uses repetitive exercises and a range of stretches to strengthen the muscles under your skin, improve circulation and maintain your natural beauty. With regular practice, facial yoga works to combat, and in some cases even reverse, the signs of aging. It utilizes a range of facial exercises to tackle those telltale signs; crows feet, forehead wrinkles, drooping eyelids, jowls, thinning skin and eye wrinkles. Ready to take on them all?

Benefits of Face Yoga

I was making the funny faces in the mirror by this point, but here are a few more reasons to give it a try. Face yoga benefits include:

  • Decreased fold lines
  • Wider, more open eyes
  • Reduce forehead lines
  • Wider, fuller lips and mouth
  • Uplifted corners of the mouth
  • Improved lymphatic flow
  • Reduction in dark under eye circles

  • Can easily be practiced at home

Fans of Face Yoga

I´m not usually one for celebrity endorsements, however Megan Markle, Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Aniston have all spoken about the benefits of face yoga, and just look at their skin. With youthful complexions like theirs to advocate, it´s worth seeing what difference a few strange expressions can make.

How to Practice Face Yoga

Much like traditional yoga, face yoga takes daily practice for the best results. I´ve been doing my exercises in front of the bathroom mirror and we should start to see results after just a few weeks.

Ready to Practice Face Yoga?

5 face yoga exercises to combat the signs of aging.

Exercise 1 – Eye Lift

Targets: Crows feet and droopy eyelids.

When performed on a regular basis, this exercise is said to smooth out skin around the eye and reduce lid drooping.

How to perform

  1. Lifting one arm up and around your head, place your fingertips on your temple, with your ring finger positioned on the corner of your eyebrow.
  2. Apply pressure through your fingers to lift the skin and then drop your head towards your shoulder.
  3. Hold this pose for three seconds and repeat on the other side.

Exercise 2 – Cheek Plumper

Targets:
Fullness in cheeks

As we age our cheeks can loose fullness. This face yoga exercise works the cheek muscles, improving circulation and giving the cheeks a plumper appearance.

How to Perform

  1. With your lips closed tightly, suck in your cheeks to form a fish-like mouth.
  2. Hold this exercise for around ten seconds and relax.
  3. Repeat five time for each practice.

Exercise 3 – Jowl & Neck Tightener

Targets: Jowls

Designed to tighten the neck, resulting in a firmer, more defined jaw line.

How to Perform

  1. Pucker your lips and leading with your mouth, stretch your lower face to one side, as far over as possible.
  2. Turn your head to that side and raise your chin to a 45 degree angle (you should feel the stretch in your neck)
  3. Hold for 10 seconds, relax, and then do the same for the other side.
  4. Repeat 3 times each day, as part of your practice.

Exercise 4 – Neck Tightener

Targets: Loose skin around the neck and jawline

Since skin around the neck is thinner, it is often one of the first areas to show signs of aging. This simple exercise works to strengthen neck muscles and improve circulation in this area.

How to Perform

  1. Place fingertips on your collar bone, tilt your head backwards and pucker your lips.
  2. After two deep breaths, move your lower jaw forward to increase the stretch for a further two breaths.
  3. Once your breaths are complete, relax bring your head back to center and repeat three more times.

Exercise 5 – Forehead Smoother

Targets: Forehead lines

This is my favorite exercise to end on as it smooths forehead lines and relaxes your forehead muscles – a lot of tension can be stored here.

How to Perform

  1. Making two fists, place them together in the center of your forehead.
  2. Begin to apply pressure using your index and middle finger knuckles.
  3. Maintaining the pressure, steadily drag your fist out from the center of your forehead, ending at your temples.
  4. Repeat this five times to end your face yoga practice for the day.

DIY: The Ultimate Face and Body Oil

DIY: The Ultimate Face and Body Oil

Today on the Style Beyond Age blog we´re creating DIY the ultimate face and body oil.

We’re all doing a little more DIY lately. From Dinner to entertaining to spa days, we have all have been asked to stay at home and do it all ourselves. Honestly, these last few weeks have been a refreshing change from our fast-paced, easy-access world that we live in. But we have all been missing the conveniences and joy of everyday life. Today, I’m going to share with you the recipe to my all-time favorite “Do It Yourself” face and body oil, which brings me joy every day!

I have always been an advocate of face and body oils. Regular old moisturizers have never really done it for me. They are filled with stabilizers to help their shelf-life and texture, along with a host of other ingredients that I don’t want to put on my most precious organ, my skin.

Make Your Own DIY Ultimate Face & Body Oil

Women have been making and using oils to moisturize their bodies for centuries. Applying body oil while you’re still wet helps seal in the moisture. Use this potion daily for ultra-hydrated and super glowy skin.

Uses:

  • Press into body and face

  • Add to bath to help retain moisture

  • Makeup refresh; pat a little oil onto the skin over makeup to enliven your face and freshen your whole look.

I mix up the following ingredients in equal parts. This healing oil is a concentrated and potent formula; a little bit goes a long way! You can use it in the morning, at night, or both for dramatic results.

Rule of thumb, for every 1 ounce of oil you add 12 drops of essential oil. If you have sensitive skin, I suggest cutting the drops from 12 to 6 per 1 ounce. Make sure your oils are cold-pressed and organic. I love a combination of rose and lavender essential oils, but you can mix up your scent. I prepare my body using the Microdermamitt and then apply.

Benefits of Ingredients

  • Jojoba seed oil: Jojoba is a healing and moisturizing oil that cleans and clears the skin penetrating deep into the tissues with molecules small enough to pass the dermal barrier. It is an unsurpassed skin conditioner as it contains no triglycerides, and it is shelf-stable, unlike coconut, almond, and grape seed oils. Jojoba also creates an environment unsuitable for infection and fungus.

  • Apricot seed oil: This oil is rich in fatty acids and vitamins A C & E the three most important vitamins for combating free radicals in the skin from the effects of pollution and other environmental factors. It is full of antioxidants and is used in traditional Chinese medicine for inflammation, one of the primary reasons for skin distress and deterioration. As with Jojoba, apricot seed oil absorbs quickly into the skin, and it’s never greasy.

  • Avocado oil: This oil is packed with vitamins and other collagen-building amino acids. It will soothe and heal broken skin and increase epidermal elasticity for a firmer, more youthful appearance.

  • Rosehip seed oil: This is a superstar extract, rich with vitamins and will correct dark spots, reduce fine lines, treat eczema, and resolve scar tissue. It is anti-inflammatory and repairs the skin surface while restoring elasticity and protecting from environmental damage.

  • Pomegranate seed oil: Pomegranate is extremely high in Punicic acid which has been shown to significantly inhibit invasion of membranes by cancer cells. Although each of the critical fatty acids works synergistically in the pomegranate, which is why we use only the whole seed, punicic acid is the star is proven to have positive effects on several forms of cancer and all types of inflammation. Full of antioxidants that fight skin aging, this oil is also a potent source of Ellagic acid, another powerful anti-inflammatory.

  • Borage seed oil: This oil has the highest concentration of gamma-linolenic acid found anywhere in nature. It will improve or resolve eczema, atopic dermatitis, and psoriasis. It will also address inflammation acute or chronic and heal dry, scaly skin with one application. The oil treats skin injuries and environmental damage, and it plays a crucial role in restoring the intracellular moisture barrier, which is the reason behind dry and damaged skin.

  • Sea Buckthorn Seed Oil: This oil is a miracle oil for reversing wrinkles, smoothing and firming skin texture, and diminishing age spots. This oil is also an effective treatment for rosacea, irritation, sunburn, and more. It is packed with vitamin C and fatty acids; this oil is a transformative and healing gift. Only the seed should be used since the berry does not possess these qualities.

  • Hyaluronic acid: A natural component of young skin, hyaluronic acid acts as a sponge that holds moisture within your tissue. Replenishing hyaluronic acid helps plump and firm the skin and give it flexibility and strength. It also creates a smooth barrier as it draws moisture from the air and seals it in to create a silky hydrating finish.

  • Coleus Forskohlii: Coleus is an aromatic herb that is antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-magnetic, and anti-inflammatory. It inhibits the growth of skin pathogens and prevents infection. It is both milder and more effective than Tea tree oil.

Essential oils:

  • Lemon essential oil is the ultimate skin lightener and brighter, it also helps to tighten sagging skin, and it can even help regulate oil production.

  • Orange essential oil is an effective anti-aging oil that increases collagen and blood flow, also an excellent antiseptic for oily skin types.

  • Lemongrass essential oil is a natural antiseptic and astringent; it can be tolerated on all skin types; leaves skin more even, brighter and glowing.

  • Lavender essential oil is an all-around great pic for an essential oil to use on your skin. It is calming, gentle, and nourishing. Lavender oil can reduce the appearance of blemishes and give your skin a youthful glow. The oil can also help you if you are prone to skin irritation or sunburns.

  • Tea tree essential oil is nature’s little miracle. Use this remedy on bug bites or small breakouts. This oil is a natural anti-microbial, so it kills bacteria that could cause acne fungus and even dandruff.

  • Rose essential oil is a multi-purpose essential oil that can help nourish, hydrate, and heal your skin. Roses have been used for thousands of years to help moisturize and support the appearance of healthy, youthful-looking skin. Rose is the most valuable oil because it is distilled from the rose petal to release a delicate flower oil through steam gently.
