Taking the Topic of Depression & Suicide Out of the Closet

Taking the Topic of Depression & Suicide Out of the Closet

I am a glass-half-full kind of gal, I joke and say “If I need my glass to be fuller, I’ll pour it in a smaller cup!” All that, tongue-in-cheek of course. I never understood depression. I thought you could “snap out of it.”

It was not until my mothers’ death that I felt the sting of it. After the month or so of packing and inventorying and selling mothers home, I came to the house in Montana and locked myself up in my bedroom. I turned down all the shades and stayed in there for three days.
It is only when you have experienced even a touch of it, that you begin to understand that depression is not so simple…

The importance of this topic lies in our ability to give suicide and depression life instead of death. Talking to your friends and family, asking for help and knowing that you are not alone is the first, and hardest, step in becoming mentally stronger during these bouts.

Sufia joined us during our multigenerational photo shoot. As a high school counselor, she is passionate about opening up the conversation to her kids, as well as, her community about the importance of suicide awareness and prevention.

“I’ve witnessed the devastation caused by suicide. The feelings of pain, guilt, confusion, and anger can be overwhelming for the family and friends of the victims of suicide.”  -Sufia

Suicide is a difficult topic to talk about, but just one look at the statistics and you can see why it’s important to address this issue. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) WISQARS Leading Causes of Death Reports, in 2016:

  • Suicide was the tenth leading cause of death overall in the United States, claiming the lives of nearly 45,000 people.
  • Suicide was the second leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 10 and 34, and the fourth leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 35 and 54.
  • There were more than twice as many suicides (44,965) in the United States as there were homicides (19,362).

It can be scary to think that someone we know could be thinking about taking their own life, but there are steps you can take to help. I encourage you to learn more about suicide prevention.

I saw an interview with a young author, Johann Hari who wrote “Lost Connections: Uncovering The Real Causes of Depression and the Unexpected Solution.” Perhaps we don’t always have to mask and medicate our way through depression. In this book, he speaks to scientists and experts about the neuroscience behind depression and non-medical related treatments for getting through it all. I encourage you to check out this best-selling book.

If you don’t think you’re affected by this subject, I encourage you to take a closer look at your loved ones. Be kind to those you encounter. Share a smile with a stranger and a kind word to those who you may feel opposition from. Remember that depression can affect anyone at any given time. Don’t be shy, if you need anyone to listen; our door is always open.

The New Dior Saddle Bag: A Blast From the Past Has Been Updated

The New Dior Saddle Bag: A Blast From the Past Has Been Updated

You may have noticed in July when every single blogger in the blogosphere sported their brand new Dior Saddle Bag. The brand took to Instagram on July 19th, endorsed by celebrities and influencers alike, to welcome the reissue of the crown jewel of Dior’s accessory business back in 2000.

Since this year’s fashion trend seems to be a blast from the past, the iconic Saddle Bag is a reissue that we are thrilled to see!

The new saddle bags are available in-store and range in price from $2,350 for the mini oblique saddle, up to $8,500 for the medium bag embroidered with beads and fringe. A sampling of the first delivery is below.

Rumor has it the second delivery of new Dior saddle bags will be dropping sometime this month. Although the exact date of the second drop hasn’t been announced yet, our sources say that the below are at least some of the styles we can expect any moment now.

If you’re more of a vintage lover, you can find gently used style on Tradesy, the Real Real or good ‘ol eBay.

In the meantime, check out this gorgeous making-of video, courtesy of Dior. It’s seriously almost as lovely as the bags themselves.

How I’m quitting Sugar. Tips and tricks to healthier eating habits.

How I’m quitting Sugar. Tips and tricks to healthier eating habits.

Earlier this month, I was a little down on energy, very unusual for me, so I stopped into the nearest wellness clinic for a quick B12 shot. This is an old trick for an energy boost handed down from my mother (yours too probably). Honestly, I don’t think that they ever help but “what the heck” I thought, it can’t hurt either! I usually have high energy, I sleep well, work out regularly and have a great attitude, so getting a little boost here and there won’t hurt. Right?

While at the clinic I was asked if I had ever done a simple urine test to see how I metabolize my food. I had been eating two eggs for breakfast pretty regularly for years (I thought perhaps I was becoming allergic). I am careful to eat organically, and I stick to a clean diet of fish & veggies for the most part. (I’ve been off  meat for over 15 years now). Internally, I was feeling a little off, so I was curious what this test might say.

A month later I went in for my test results on my usual cloud 9 and was pushed off my pedestal immediately. A fungus had colonized my gut taking over my digestive track causing me to feel exhausted, unfocused, bloated and anxious. Candida. I had no idea.

“What’s candida” you might be wondering. Candida is a fungus, in the form of yeast, and trace amounts live in our mouths and intestines. Candida is a good fungus that lives within all of us to help with digestion and nutrient absorption. However, when overproduced it can be incredibly toxic, breaking down the walls of the intestine, penetrating the bloodstream causing health issues from digestive issues to depression.

What is the number one cause for this overgrowth? SUGAR of course! Sugar in your body feeds all sorts of culprits. It promotes fungus in your gut, destroys collagen in your skin, brings cellulite to the surface, and messes with your insulin levels. Sugar is truly addictive. Have you ever noticed that once you eat it, you NEED it? Sugar cravings are no joke. Contrary to popular belief, sugar is not the sustainable source of energy that some people rely on.

I think all of us could use a little sugar detox.

Here are a few tips if you are trying to avoid sugar:

Know your go-to beverage

Mine is a homemade lemonade with freshly squeezed organic lemons and a dash of Truvia. I also start and end my day with a glass of water with two tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar this helps balance the system. I never ever ever drink soda.

Cut down on your alcohol consumption

There’s no arguing with the facts on this one. Cocktails mixed with juice or soda are not only high in calories but sugar too. Aside from drinking too much, the sugar content in drinks is often what accounts for bad hangovers.

Eat protein when you crave sugar

Sugar cravings are usually a sign that you need protein. If I’m on the road, I will reach for Epic’s salmon bars for an emergency protein injection. Otherwise, I’ll quickly scramble an egg cook up some chicken tenders in olive oil.

You can find Epic Bars on Amazon

Make your salad dressing

This is huge! Eating healthily can be so confusing sometimes am I right! You order a salad filled with tons of healthy and filling veggies, but then you top it off with a dressing that is secret sugar bomb! Homemade salad dressing is the only road to go. Our house specialty is olive oil and freshly squeezed lemon juice. When blended in your nutrabullet the oil and citrus emulsify creating a bright creamy dressing! Add in whatever herbs and spices you have hanging around, and you’ll thank me later!

And when all else fails, and you need to have that bite of chocolate try Lilly’s chocolates. I found this at my health food store, sweetened with Truvia. It is the perfect treat when you have that chocolate!

You can buy Lily’s on Amazon

More tips and tricks

  • I never go anywhere without some food. Usually organic almonds in a recycled glass jar.
  • I eat when I’m hungry I don’t wait for a set time. Just a little all day long.
  • When I’m out to dinner, I keep what I shouldn’t be eating off the table. (that’s you bread basket)
  • I keep my house devoid of what isn’t good for me. By the time you go out to get what you think you are craving you usually don’t want it anymore.

Eating well is a lifestyle, not a diet. When you get used to making good choices, your pallet changes and what we think was great (greasy, salty, sugary) no longer tastes great!

Good Healthy Food is Integral to your Well-being, and you are worth it.

You wouldn’t put diesel in your Maserati, would you?!

What Art Means to Me

What Art Means to Me

How do you experience art?

When I first met my husband we took a trip to Santa Fe. We walked through the art galleries had beautiful dinners and made wonderful memories. During that time we bought our first piece of art. I thought it was an extravagance and now I know it was. Every time I look at it, I remember that day, and it brings me joy.

Sonia and Jen Idol

Lina Crespi

My great grandmother Lina Crespi was an artist. My mother’s home was full of her beautiful oil paintings set during her life in Italy and then in the mountains of Patagonia. Some of them are stored now, but I brought a few to my home in Montana. Every time I look at them it reminds me of the past I miss so much and the women in my life that molded me.

While in Montana we would go to the Dick Idol Gallery in Whitefish to admire a painting that glowed. It is a series of teepees that eventually came home with us. Since then we commissioned two others by Colt Idol. It has been interesting to watch my husband be involved in creating his vision with an incredibly skilled artist. Every time I look at these paintings I see that collaboration between the imagination of one and the skill of the other.

I fell in love with a bronze sculpture of a grizzly bear. Eric Thorson is a beautiful sculptor of animals. We would visit his gallery every time we went to Big Fork, I would caress the life-size sitting bear with his paw in the water. For some reason, it always reminded me of my wonderful dog Duke. Finally, I committed to having one cast. It took me a year to pay for it, and it was worth it. Still, as I was waiting, I would go in and kiss the one at the gallery. In the end, all of that energy came home to me through an odd chance, and I ended up with the original I had developed a relationship with.

I went through a period where I played around with acrylics. I would exhaust myself on a large canvas. I can’t replicate anything but what would come out would be part of my soul. Pseudo art I would call it. Painting feels a lot like life in so many ways. You start with an idea, and it begins to flourish. Then it looks like hell, and you start tweaking it. Back and forth it goes, and in the end, you are “satisfied.” But, you always see that one thing that didn’t quite work out.

Sonia Lovett “Pseudo Art”

Art is an expression of life and life is an expression of art. There is history and wonder in all of it. Keep yours out in a prominent place. It reminds us of our history and the majesty of the human spirit.

Is your body in balance?

About a year ago my hair started to fall out. RAPIDLY. I noticed it at first and thought it was stress. But then I was real with myself and asked: What stress? Typically I have a very laissez faire attitude towards life. Especially as I have gotten older and realize that I need to be prepared, not worried, about what might come my way.  There must be something else creating this change in my system.

My father used to say “you have to know how to cross the bridge before you get there.” Later I came to realize by the time you get to the bridge it has already moved. Knowing there is a bridge is the key though. Anyway. I digress. Hair loss is the issue here….

I love this shot of my beautiful friend Sue

I had my thyroid looked into. Dear ol’ Thryroid gets blamed for a lot of things but in my case, I was fine.

My hair was falling out at such a rate that it was impossible I wasn’t bald yet! I kept 24 hours worth of my fallen hair in a zip-lock and made an appointment with Dr. Jennifer Hawes. You might remember Dr. Hawes from our post in July. She gave us a very down to earth and clear commentary on the difference between bioidentical and pharmaceutical hormones and the many benefits they can provide. If you missed it, you can read it HERE.

A week later I was sitting in her office with my zip lock in evidence and a quite distressed look on my face. After giving her a synopsis and recanting the vitamins and medication I take (very little besides my hormones) she drew my blood and sent it to the lab.

The results came back quickly. In my case, the answer was slightly elevated testosterone levels and low iron.

She also recommended that I start using a Biotin supplement to help strengthen my hair and nails. I choose Life Sprout Bioceuticals for their natural ingredients. They also have on-call experts from diet and nutrition to fitness and exercise. I found their website is very informative! You have to check them out for $5 off of your orders CODE: STYLE5

Use CODE STYLE5 for $5 off of your orders at Life Sprout Bioceuticals

Within a week of making these changes, my hair loss was significancy reduced. I couldn’t believe how a small change could make such a big difference. It has been about two months now and I barely have a hair in my brush. Hallelujah!

If you are having problems and see no reason for your hair loss, I urge you to have your blood panel checked. One small thing can get you off balance, and who’s got time for that?

My Galápagos Islands Eco Adventure

My Galápagos Islands Eco Adventure

The Galapagos Islands, A UNESCO world Heritage Site; brings Charles Darwin’s Theory of Evolution to life.

This has always been on my bucket list. I have been fascinated by Darwin’s work on evolution and have looked forward to walking amongst dramatic landscapes, primeval Iguanas, and Blue Footed Boobies. Amazingly, this remote site consisting of Islands and archipelagoes was formed millions of years ago by volcanic eruptions and has been relatively untouched by man.

The greater number of the animals you will see in the Galápagos Islands are found nowhere else. Think about that….. This is the one place where animals have adapted and evolved with little or no predators and which defined the therory of natural selection and evolution which Charles Darwin presented in 1859.

Blue Footed Boobies

Though great conditions for exploring abound yearlong, the best times to visit the islands is from December through June. The weather ranges between the 70’s and 80’s and the snorkeling and hiking are great.

Landing in Quito, at an altitude of 9,350 ft, might be daunting; but we were not affected by the altitude at all. The capital of Ecuador is surrounded by snowcapped mountains just a few miles from the equator. This is where, in the 18th century a multinational expedition located at zero degrees latitude established an accurate measurement of the earths size for the first time. The city is filled with such history.

Quito, Equador

My hubby, eyes closed and all!

The magnificent Spanish colonial architecture and Baroque style churches mixed with a lively street life makes the city a great place to explore. Stay at Casa Gangotena if you can. If not at least take yourself to dinner there.

After a six hundred mile flight off the coast you will arrive in Baltra and embark on your ship. With naturalists to guide you and evening educational speakers, I can’t think of a better way to be guided through this experience.

The Gardens at Hotel Casa Gangotena

I was prepared for all the islands to be arid and desolate. Our first island Fernandina was just that. The slopes of the La Cumbre Volcano are like a lunar landscape but you are rewarded by the largest concentration of wildlife in the Galapagos. Between flightless cormorants Sea Lions , marine iguanas , pelicans and the smallest penguins on earth, the island does not disappoint.

Off of Isabella Island we came face to face with an Orca Whale. Enough said! Well there is more. Fleets of dolphins jumping by the hundreds and on land the most beautiful birds and largest land iguanas in the world .

Orca Whale, Galapagos Islands

Giant Tort

Santa Cruz is home to the Charles Darwin Research Center. Don’t miss it. The Giant Tortoises can be seen at a conservatory called Primicias as well. The countryside is lush there are farms and ranches and the local food is wonderful. We visited a farm called Fortiz. . BTU I saw some nice jewelry stores in town and a few boutique hotels The beaches are pristine and you can swim amongst colorful reef fish, marine iguanas and lava gulls.

We kayaked the islands amongst mangroves with sea lions napping on limbs and playful babies swimming up curiously as we paddled by. We snorkeled above feeding turtles as the smallest penguins on earth rocket by under us. We watched the delicate finches in the trees using twigs as eating utensils and we almost tripped over the hundreds of black iguanas as they disappeared into the black lava rock by the sea. We observed the largest tortoises in the world and the smallest crabs in the ocean. We saw a lake with pink flamingos and walked by a coral reef stranded 20 feet above the waters’ surface by a volcano.

Sleepy Sea Lions

Go Now! It was an experience I will never forget and would do again in a heartbeat. There is a reason why we protect our eco systems: the diversity, outstanding beauty and fleeting nature of it all reminds us of the wonders of our planet and our responsibility to not abuse it. Go forth and adventure!

The End of An Era: The September Issue

The End of An Era: The September Issue

Challenging times are ahead for the glossy magazines that I loved so dearly growing up. I got an email from my best friend and fellow stylist on Monday: Re: The September Issue is DEAD. Can this be true? And if so, what does that even mean?

September marks the beginning of Fall. Transitioning from the sheer nakedness of summer into layers and textures. Summer is over, school and work commence as we finish off the year as strong as we started it. For the fashion industry, and those who follow it, The September issue has been the Bible. It is loaded with the freshest in Fall fashion showcased and beautifully curated by the masterminds behind what is “IN”. The editors.

Growing up I would plaster my walls with beautiful spreads from W and Vogue. It was the first time that I had seen clothes and fashion used in a way that really spoke to me. These images were an expression and an extension of the creators vision and I couldn’t get enough of them. Imagination was stretched and fantasy was born within me. It was in these pages that I developed my craft as a stylist.

The way that we receive information has evolved drastically. We live in the digital age where everything is available to us in an instant and on our phones. There is no need to wait until September to see what’s happening for Fall. After all, we saw everything on the runway in February! If knowledge is power then the editors of these publications have nothing on us. There is no surprise and reveal when your favorite celebrity influencer is live-streaming the preview from the front row.

With the onset of fast fashion and even faster celebrity influence, can anyone catch up and stay there? Is the patriarchy of the magazine editor over? And if so, are we at the mercy of the celebrity du jour? At what point do we start finding inspiration outside of what someone else dictates to us and find it within ourselves?

We’d like to hear from you. What drives your creative fires? Are they in the pages of a magazine, or in your Instagram feed? How do you remain an Individual in a Social Media driven world?
