Why I Stopped and Restarted Eating a Pescatarian Diet

Why I Stopped and Restarted Eating a Pescatarian Diet

I´ve been eating a Pescatarian diet for decades, but there are pros and cons. On the Style Beyond Age blog I´m sharing the benefits and the pitfalls to avoid. I know because I fell into one.

What is a Pescatarian Diet?

You hear Pescatarian and you think of fish, but it´s a heavily plant-based diet. The difference being, unlike a vegan or vegetarian diet, it incorporates fish and seafood as a primary protein source.

My Experience Eating a Pescatarian Diet

I had been eating this way for decades, then a little over a year ago I had a mercury test. There it was in my bloodstream. I stopped eating fish and began a daily detox shake. Now, I am about to start back on my Pescatarian ways, but I had my scare. Hence why I´m sharing the good with the bad, and the detox juice recipe that helped me through.

Health Benefits of being Pescatarian

The addition of seafood to a heavily plant-based diet means valuable nutrients such as vitamin B12, Omega-3 fatty acids, zinc and protein are in greater supply. According to the experts, health benefits can include lower blood cholesterol, lower blood pressure and a decreased risk of heart disease or diabetes.

Cons to a Pescatarian Diet

Eating high levels of seafood can expose yourself to higher levels of mercury, which can have alarming side effects and is something to take seriously. Like any diet, it is about balance. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) advise limiting consumption to two or three servings a week, and opting for fish with low mercury levels.

But how do you know?

Eating-Pescatarian-Diet-Style-Beyond-Age-Lifestyle-Blogger 3

High Mercury Fish

As a rule, larger fish are more likely to contain higher levels of mercury. The reason being, they absorb the mercury from the smaller fish they ingest throughout their lifetime. It´s helpful to know which fish are high in mercury, so you know what to avoid, and what to enjoy as you please.

Fish Low in Mercury – Eat at will

Anchovies, Scallops, Herring, Pollock, Sardines, Catfish, Shrimp, Oysters, Crayfish, and Squid.

Fish with Moderate Levels of Mercury – Enjoy sparingly

Carp, Cod, Lobster, Herring, Hake and Salmon.

Fish high in Mercury – Be weary

Swordfish, King Mackerel, Marlin, Bigeye Tuna and Northern Pike.

If you are concerned about high levels of mercury, a simple blood test will give you the answer. You know who to call…

Eating-Pescatarian-Diet-Style-Beyond-Age-Lifestyle-Blogger 4

Quality Matters

As with most things, quality matters. The amount of mercury in fish can be affected by pollution in its environment or over-farming, so ask the questions about where your fish came from. When shopping for wild-caught fish, FOS (Friend of the Sea) or MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) seals show the catch was responsibly sourced. If purchasing farmed fish, support sustainable operations where possible.

Daily Detox Juice Recipe

Should you get caught out, like I did, then a detox can help to flush your system. This Heavy Metal Detox Juice is designed to purge them from the body, and it´s a recipe I enjoy. I say recipe, but there is no cooking involved, promise.

Heavy-metal-detox-juice-Style-Beyond-Age-Lifestyle-Blogger
I opt for a juice, as I find smoothies to be a landmine of carbohydrates disguised as something healthy and nutritious; which of course they are, but with consequences that are often ignored. No thank you weight gain; I´m after a cleanse and it´s so simple; you´ll see…

Returning to a Pescatarian Diet

So, after a year of detox juices and clean eating, I´m reverting back to my Pescatarian diet; only this time a little wiser.

If you´re also considering the switch, here are some food bloggers for thought…

Pescatarian Friendly Recipes

For the keen cooks among you, of which I am not, these are worth a look. I´m all for the culinary creativity, and the eating; it´s the clean-up I can’t stand.

5 Ways you can Support Small Businesses During Covid

5 Ways you can Support Small Businesses During Covid

There´s a whole lot of female-led fabulousness on the Style Beyond Age blog today, we´re sharing 5 ways that you can support small businesses during the time of Covid.

Support Small Businesses during Covid

As the country starts to relax its Covid-19 precautions, we emerge into a different world. No matter where you are, I’m sure that you feel and see a change. Everything from the way we socialize, shop, eat, and engage is evolving.

As we transition into this “new normal,” have you noticed that some of your go-to retailers haven’t come back or are packing up their storefronts for good? Some national retailers haven’t re-opened their doors yet, and if they have, they are only offering limited services or curbside pickups.

Quote-Life-Shrinks-or-Contracts-Style-Beyond-Age

Support Small Businesses

I see my local boutique owners as brave because these are stark and scary times for small businesses. Women often run most of these businesses that we admire and depend on as a community.

And as you know, here at Style Beyond Age, we LOVE to support our fellow female entrepreneurs. I’ve made a list of my favorite shops that you can patronize today and five ways to help support small businesses during these transitional times!

5 Ways you can Support Small Businesses During Covid

(and Beyond)

1 – Shop local – online

Our communities need us now more than ever. Online shopping is convenient and can be done right from the comfort of your couch! Most, if not all, small business retailers have websites offering their products with a click of your mouse that can be delivered right to your door. Honestly, I love this way of shopping. I get just what I need, and it is available for pickup within the hour.

2 – Purchase gift cards

Consider buying gift cards for the businesses you visit most often to use later when they are officially up and running again.

3 – Order takeout

Can’t wait until you can eat your favorite meals from your favorite local restaurants? Many are keeping things going by offering meals to go, and some are even providing free delivery. This is a great way to keep money going into the local community while enjoying all your favorite dishes.

4 – Increase the tip amount

Don’t forget, servers and delivery people will also be feeling the decrease in business, and many of them survive on the tips they’re now missing. If you’re ordering takeout or delivery, consider giving a little more than usual when tipping.

5 – Practice patience

We’re all in this together. Don’t forget that many small businesses are most likely working with a skeleton crew, so you might have to wait a little longer for your delivery to arrive or for items to become available to purchase.

10 Rules to Even Self Tan Application

10 Rules to Even Self Tan Application

From skin preparation through to applying and preserving your tan. Here are 10 rules to even self-tan application that everyone needs to know.

It´s no secret that I enjoy a good glow.  Applying self-tanner allows me to achieve a sun-kissed look any time of the year, without the harmful UV rays damaging my skin. There are a few potential stumbling blocks though, so today on the Style Beyond Age blog, I´m sharing my top tips to achieve an even and natural-looking self-tan.

10 Rules to Even Self-Tan Application

1 – Leave Self-Tanning until Last

Self-Tanning should be the last step in your self-care routine. If you’re planning on getting a manicure, shaving, or waxing, make sure it´s all taken care of before you start your application. These treatments will remove your self-tan and we don´t want you going to all this effort for nothing.

2 – Exfoliate your Body before Applying Self Tan

Self-tan and dry skin do not mix, so exfoliating your body is a crucial step in the application process. I like to use my exfoliating body mitt in the shower, paying particular attention to the heels, ankles, knees and elbows. A back exfoliator is also handy, for those hard-to-reach places.

3  – Exfoliate your Face before applying self-tan

Like your body, your face also requires TLC before self-tan application. I use a facial exfoliating mitt, which is much kinder to your delicate facial skin than the alternative mitt for your body. Methode Brigitte Kettner also has a gentle, yet effective exfoliating tool, that I have been using for years on my face.

4 – Dry Fully Before Applying the Product

After washing and exfoliating, allow yourself time to dry completely before moving onto the next stage. I recommend waiting fifteen minutes once you´re out of the shower. It sounds like a small step, but it can make a big difference, don´t be tempted to rush ahead. A great towel helps with patience. This is my favorite, an oversized lightweight Italian waffle weave towel.

5 – Moisturize your Skin

Once you´re fully dry, but before the self-tan is applied, we need to add some moisture back into the skin. I like to use Cetaphil Moisturizer cream around my knees, ankles and elbows to avoid these areas taking on a darker shade. For my face, I choose Perricone MD and pay special attention to my nostrils, eyebrows and hairline.

Style Beyond Age Self Tan Application Tips 1

6  – From the Bottom to the Top

When applying self-tanner, we work from the bottom to the top. Starting with the feet and legs, moving onto the body, and finally applying to your face.

When applying the self-tan, avoid using your hands. Our hands move the product around the skin too much and often leave us looking sad and streaky, instead use a mitt like this one from Best Bronze for the most even results.

Style Beyond Age Self Tan Application Tips 3

7  – Applying to your Face

Less is more when it comes to applying self-tan to your face. I sparingly dab the self-tanner on the areas of my face that would naturally catch the sun. Focus on your forehead, cheek bones and around your nose, then gently spread the product out towards your hairline and the edges of your face, to achieve a natural look.

8  – Extend the recommended drying time

For the best self-tan results, extend the recommended drying time of the product. If product guidelines recommend ten minutes, allow for twenty and you won´t be in for any nasty surprise streaks.

9  – Tidy Up Problem Areas

If you have messed up, there are ways to rectify things. Some say rubbing a lemon on the area will remove streaks. For those streaks that a lemon can´t budge, soak the area in warm water and oil to remove the tanner, before applying again.

Style Beyond Age Self Tan Application Tips 2

10 – Preserve your Tan

Now that you’ve gone to all this effort, we want your tan to last. Keeping your skin moisturized, washing gently in the shower and minimal exfoliation will help to preserve your tan and keep it looking good for longer.

I hope you enjoyed these 10 rules to even self-tan application.

Day to Evening Maxi Skirt Restyle

Day to Evening Maxi Skirt Restyle

Today, at Style Beyond Age, we´re taking you from day to night with a maxi skirt restyle. As you know, we love to feature women-owned brands and businesses. I was over the bridge, excited to connect with the Peruvian Connection. Not only are they a woman-owned company but were founded by a mother and daughter team! That resonates with me because, as you know, I am super close with my daughter and our resident stylist, Serena.

Style-Beyond-Age-Peruvian-Connection_7

She has taught me a lot over the years about styling and using dynamic color theory to change a look completely.

When we shop for clothing, we look for items that can be worn in multiple unique ways and through the seasons. Today, we’re going to show you how to style this jacquard circle skirt, from Peruvian Connection, for a casual day time look and another for a warm summer night.

How to Wear a Bohemian Maxi Skirt Casually

Let’s be real; you know that I only live in casual looks here in Montana. Keeping it light, I paired my Siena skirt with one of the Peruvian Connections Sophia Swing Cami  in blush and used a white camp shirt to cover up. Layered with a suede and pearl lariat necklace from Proud Pearls  and topped it off with a tan straw hat (also Peruvian Connection).

My Day to Night Maxi Skirt Restyle

I swapped out the blush cami and white camp shirt for a more romantic black knit blouse that I’ve had for years. I love the soft fabric and off the shoulder neckline of this top. It makes any outfit feel softer and more romantic. Paired with delicate black wicker handbag and my favorite vintage silver and coral pieces, I feel like Stevie Nicks!

5 Face Yoga Exercises to Naturally Combat the Signs of Aging

5 Face Yoga Exercises to Naturally Combat the Signs of Aging

Aging gracefully can be a scary thought in a world saturated with lotions, potions and procedures that promise to be the elixir of youth. Facial yoga is a practice on the rise and it is said to achieve that youthful lift many of us are searching for. Here are 5 face yoga exercises to combat the signs of aging, that you can try at home.

Queue the funny faces…

What is Face Yoga

Face yoga is a natural alternative to procedures like facelifts and Botox. It uses repetitive exercises and a range of stretches to strengthen the muscles under your skin, improve circulation and maintain your natural beauty. With regular practice, facial yoga works to combat, and in some cases even reverse, the signs of aging. It utilizes a range of facial exercises to tackle those telltale signs; crows feet, forehead wrinkles, drooping eyelids, jowls, thinning skin and eye wrinkles. Ready to take on them all?

Benefits of Face Yoga

I was making the funny faces in the mirror by this point, but here are a few more reasons to give it a try. Face yoga benefits include:

  • Decreased fold lines
  • Wider, more open eyes
  • Reduce forehead lines
  • Wider, fuller lips and mouth
  • Uplifted corners of the mouth
  • Improved lymphatic flow
  • Reduction in dark under eye circles
  • Plumper cheeks
  • Slimmer, more defined jaw line
  • Tighter neck and chin
  • Increased blood flow
  • Released tension
  • Smoother skin
  • Can easily be practiced at home

Fans of Face Yoga

I´m not usually one for celebrity endorsements, however Megan Markle, Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Aniston have all spoken about the benefits of face yoga, and just look at their skin. With youthful complexions like theirs to advocate, it´s worth seeing what difference a few strange expressions can make.

How to Practice Face Yoga

Much like traditional yoga, face yoga takes daily practice for the best results. I´ve been doing my exercises in front of the bathroom mirror and we should start to see results after just a few weeks.

Ready to Practice Face Yoga?

5 face yoga exercises to combat the signs of aging.

Exercise 1 – Eye Lift

Targets: Crows feet and droopy eyelids.

When performed on a regular basis, this exercise is said to smooth out skin around the eye and reduce lid drooping.

How to perform

  1. Lifting one arm up and around your head, place your fingertips on your temple, with your ring finger positioned on the corner of your eyebrow.
  2. Apply pressure through your fingers to lift the skin and then drop your head towards your shoulder.
  3. Hold this pose for three seconds and repeat on the other side.
Style Beyond Age Face Yoga Eye Lift

Exercise 2 – Cheek Plumper

Targets:
Fullness in cheeks

As we age our cheeks can loose fullness. This face yoga exercise works the cheek muscles, improving circulation and giving the cheeks a plumper appearance.

How to Perform

  1. With your lips closed tightly, suck in your cheeks to form a fish-like mouth.
  2. Hold this exercise for around ten seconds and relax.
  3. Repeat five time for each practice.
Style Beyond Age Face Yoga Anti Aging

Exercise 3 – Jowl & Neck Tightener

Targets: Jowls

Designed to tighten the neck, resulting in a firmer, more defined jaw line.

How to Perform

  1. Pucker your lips and leading with your mouth, stretch your lower face to one side, as far over as possible.
  2. Turn your head to that side and raise your chin to a 45 degree angle (you should feel the stretch in your neck)
  3. Hold for 10 seconds, relax, and then do the same for the other side.
  4. Repeat 3 times each day, as part of your practice.
Style Beyond Age Facial Yoga

Exercise 4 – Neck Tightener

Targets: Loose skin around the neck and jawline

Since skin around the neck is thinner, it is often one of the first areas to show signs of aging. This simple exercise works to strengthen neck muscles and improve circulation in this area.

How to Perform

  1. Place fingertips on your collar bone, tilt your head backwards and pucker your lips.
  2. After two deep breaths, move your lower jaw forward to increase the stretch for a further two breaths.
  3. Once your breaths are complete, relax bring your head back to center and repeat three more times.
Style Beyond Age Face Yoga Neck Tightener

Exercise 5 – Forehead Smoother

Targets: Forehead lines

This is my favorite exercise to end on as it smooths forehead lines and relaxes your forehead muscles – a lot of tension can be stored here.

How to Perform

  1. Making two fists, place them together in the center of your forehead.
  2. Begin to apply pressure using your index and middle finger knuckles.
  3. Maintaining the pressure, steadily drag your fist out from the center of your forehead, ending at your temples.
  4. Repeat this five times to end your face yoga practice for the day.

Giggles aside, I think there could be something to this.  Are you going to try these 5 face yoga exercises to combat the signs of aging?

My Ultimate Closet Hacks to Maximize Space

My Ultimate Closet Hacks to Maximize Space

Today, I’m sharing my ultimate closet hacks to maximize space and care for your clothes.

If you didn’t already know, I´m a big fan of shopping from your own closet and being creative with the clothes you have. The downside of shopping from your own collection, is the issue of storage. It´s meant I´ve gotten quite creative over the years, so let´s take a peak what´s inside.

Transform your closet with these storage solutions

If you ask me, the closet is prime real estate, so when we were building our place in Montana, I took the opportunity to create a space I loved. I appreciate I´m blessed in the closet department now, but it wasn’t always that way. Whatever the size of your closet, a good storage solution, is a good storage solution, and are some of my favorites that I still use to this day.

My Ultimate Closet Hacks to Maximize Space

Office File Boxes

You might think they´re out of place here, but these clear file boxes from Target are handy and a great way to utilize shelf space. I line them up and store scarves inside. The clear acrylic is also very browser friendly.

files boxes from target for scarfs
files boxes from target for scarfs 2

Drawer Dividers

Drawer dividers are simple, yet effective. I use them for sock, underwear, and accessory drawers. Drawer organizers allow you to make the most of your space, stay organized and easily swap items in or out as the seasons change.

Pull Out Rods

Pull out rods are easy to install and a great space saver. I like to use them for belts, as they´re easily accessible and just as easily tucked away again.

Closet Hacks Belt Storage

Stagger Hanger Clips

Stagger the clips on your trouser hangers, to maximize hanging room. You´ll be surprised at the difference this little adjustment makes.

How to Maximize Hanging Space

Corral Old Hangers

If you´ve got unused hangers, don´t just leave them hanging there taking up space. Instead, corral them into old boxes, so they´re ready for when they´re needed again.

Closet Hacks remove unused hangers
Store hangers in boxes to maximize hanging space

Closet Hacks for Shoes and Accessories

We´ve maximized your drawer, shelf and hanging space, now onto the shoes and accessories.

Use Trays for Odds and Ends

There is often wasted space below hanging items, so make the most of this with trays and boxes. It´s a great way to gather up the odds and ends to keep them organized.

Use hanging space below clothes
Use trays to store accessories

Shoe Storage Solutions

A simple bookshelf is a great storage solution for shoes. Display them with the left toes facing out to your closet and the right toe facing back, and you´ll fit an extra pair of shoes on each shelf.

Storage Solutions for Purses

The perfect way to store your purse depends on the size of it. Larger purses should be stored hanging, to keep the bottoms from creasing. I have an adjustable display rack, that works perfectly.

For smaller purses I use an acrylic filing system, which you can pick up from any office store.

store small bag in filing rack
store small bag in filing rack

Bags and Hats

Maximize space by hanging bags and hats on a peg. No need to take up hanging room inside your closet, instead attach them to the outside of your cabinetry.

So, that rounds up my ultimate closet hacks to maximize space and care for your clothes. Enjoy transforming your closet.

Until the next time…

Covid 19 Changing the Face of Fashion: The winter of our discontent

Covid 19 Changing the Face of Fashion: The winter of our discontent

It only takes a quick scroll through Instagram to see that the Covid 19 pandemic is already changing the face of fashion. Our feeds are peppered with sweat sets, lounge wear and the newest addition, face masks.

Even at this stage, a shift in the fashion industry is apparent, but what is next? I want to explore how the future of fashion might change in light of this pandemic, which in the US at least is turning out to be thankfully much less than we had planned; but much more than we expected from an economic standpoint. So, what does this mean?

What We have Learned

This has been a time for reflection, assessment and thought. A new normal will emerge, and we are all part of its creation, so what have we learned?

About who we are: Do we want to be independent or be led in our lives

About our joint Commitment: How we join together and follow rules

About our Ingenuity: How we work to solve problems

About our Independence: How we define and defy authority

About our Security: how we buy into fear and deal with stress

In the end, history will show us how we handled this challenge, but one thing we know for sure we will have more to look back on you the next time.

The New Face of Fashion

How will fashion change? None of us really know, but here are some thoughts…

Quality over quantity. We will buy less but spend more on higher quality staples.

Fashion trends will slow down and be swapped for minimalism, capsule dressing and classic styles.

Will we see a rise in digital stylists, as shoppers seek advice from a socially safe distance?

As a nod to social distancing, will designers be playing around with hats, masks and capes?

The fashionable masks and gloves industry, here to stay? It looks that way.

It was well said by Angelo Flaccavento about the fashion industry; “this crisis is an opportunity to edit down the superfluous, to regain our long-lost soul “.

Un-Masking Creativity

If there is one fashion item to come out of the Covid 19 pandemic and define the aesthetic around the world, it´s the face mask. It looks like fashionable face masks are destined to become part of everyday fashion and we´re already seeing designers releasing their creative, revamped versions.

I am not a fan of being muzzled, so if I´m wearing a mask, it´s got to be a pretty one.

I´ve seen some gorgeous creations by Denver designer, Brooks Ltd. and there´s a beautiful face mask collection from Curriedmyrrh. I showed them off on a fun-filled day with my photographer, the talented HKCamerface, exploring the lakebed, discovering an abandoned Teepee and having lots of fun whilst, of course, maintaining social distancing.

These women, and so many others, have shone bright during these times and I have loved seeing the creativity, the invention, the resilience, the support, the beauty, the passion and the love from our fellow females. Thank you.

DIY No Sew Face Mask

If you haven´t had a chance to buy a face mask yet, you can DIY solution from home. We found this mask tutorial online and gave it a go for fun. Oh, the things you do for the Gram! HKCameraface and I had such a laugh.

My Attempt – Oh how we laughed

Not a fan of the plastic wallet visor? Here is another no sew face mask option, with a video walk through; all you´ll need is a scarf.

A New Normal

Covid 19 is changing the face of fashion and the industry’s reaction to the pandemic is quite apparent, but none of us know what the long-term future holds. I for one am taking positive lessons from this, holding onto what is important and looking forward to seeing the new normal we create from here.

I hope you enjoyed this share. It´s some fashion for thought. Until the next time….

It´s time for a re-Zinc: Are Zinc supplements necessary?

It´s time for a re-Zinc: Are Zinc supplements necessary?

At the start of this pandemic, my husband picked us up some zinc supplements from the drug store. They´re known to aid our immune system and recovery, so I´m sure others did the same, but it got me to thinking; are zinc supplements necessary or can we consume enough zinc through diet alone?

A Bit About Zinc

Our body does not produce zinc naturally, so we must obtain it from supplements or through our diet. This is quite surprising, considering it´s present in cells throughout our body and is essential to many of our vital functions.

In the US, the recommended dietary allowance of zinc is 8 milligrams per day for women and 11 milligrams per day for men. We can choose to take a supplement like this one, from Nature’s Bounty, or we can obtain the zinc we need naturally, by eating a varied and healthy diet.

DISCLAIMER: Recommended levels of zinc are lower when pregnant or breast feeding so always consult a healthcare professional.

I´m always in favor of the healthy, most natural option, so I got my research head on and this is what I found.

Zinc-rich Foods

Here are the best foods we can eat to ensure we are getting the levels of zinc our body needs each day.

Nuts

Eating nuts, such as pine nuts, cashew nuts and almonds, helps to boost your daily zinc intake.

If you´re looking for a nut that is high in zinc, cashews or pine nuts are a good choice. Toast them and sprinkle over a salad, add to a stir fry or grab a handful and enjoy as a snack.

A one ounce serving of cashews or pine nuts includes 15% of your daily recommended value of zinc.

Lentils and Legumes

Beans and lentils are a great source of zinc, as well as fiber and plant-based protein. They´re also incredibly versatile. Cook up some tacos, make a curry or blitz some humous and you´ll be well on your way to reaching your daily recommended levels of zinc.

Just one cup of lentils, provides 20% of your recommended daily intake of zinc.

A ¼ cup of humous equates to 8% of your daily recommended value of zinc.

Hemp Seeds

Hemp seeds are high in zinc, fiber, iron, and healthy fats, which we love. Just two tablespoons of hemp seeds provide us with 20% of our daily recommended intake of zinc.

Crush and season into a pesto paste, add to a smoothie or sprinkle over your salad for an extra daily boost.

Shellfish

Shellfish is generally a healthy source of zinc, but oysters contain particularly high levels. Just two oysters can provide your total recommended daily intake of zinc. It is also said to give your libido a little boost, or so the rumor goes.

Eggs

Eggs are known as being a good source of protein, but they´re also a great source of zinc. Just one egg provides 5% of your daily recommended zinc intake. Enjoy them scrambled, poached, over easy or added to a salad.

Dark Chocolate

And finally, the news many will be happy to hear; chocolate is good for you, or it can be. Good quality dark chocolate, with 70-85% coco solids, is high in zinc and antioxidants. Just one ounce of quality dark chocolate provides 8% of your daily recommended zinc levels. Now go enjoy.

I hope you found this share useful.

Will you be having a re-zinc? Are you a supplement taker or do you opt for zinc-rich foods instead?

DIY: The Ultimate Face and Body Oil

DIY: The Ultimate Face and Body Oil

Today on the Style Beyond Age blog we´re creating DIY the ultimate face and body oil.

We’re all doing a little more DIY lately. From Dinner to entertaining to spa days, we have all have been asked to stay at home and do it all ourselves. Honestly, these last few weeks have been a refreshing change from our fast-paced, easy-access world that we live in. But we have all been missing the conveniences and joy of everyday life. Today, I’m going to share with you the recipe to my all-time favorite “Do It Yourself” face and body oil, which brings me joy every day!

I have always been an advocate of face and body oils. Regular old moisturizers have never really done it for me. They are filled with stabilizers to help their shelf-life and texture, along with a host of other ingredients that I don’t want to put on my most precious organ, my skin.

Make Your Own DIY Ultimate Face & Body Oil

Women have been making and using oils to moisturize their bodies for centuries. Applying body oil while you’re still wet helps seal in the moisture. Use this potion daily for ultra-hydrated and super glowy skin.

Uses:

  • Press into body and face

  • Add to bath to help retain moisture

  • Makeup refresh; pat a little oil onto the skin over makeup to enliven your face and freshen your whole look.

I mix up the following ingredients in equal parts. This healing oil is a concentrated and potent formula; a little bit goes a long way! You can use it in the morning, at night, or both for dramatic results.

Rule of thumb, for every 1 ounce of oil you add 12 drops of essential oil. If you have sensitive skin, I suggest cutting the drops from 12 to 6 per 1 ounce. Make sure your oils are cold-pressed and organic. I love a combination of rose and lavender essential oils, but you can mix up your scent. I prepare my body using the Microdermamitt and then apply.

Benefits of Ingredients

  • Jojoba seed oil: Jojoba is a healing and moisturizing oil that cleans and clears the skin penetrating deep into the tissues with molecules small enough to pass the dermal barrier. It is an unsurpassed skin conditioner as it contains no triglycerides, and it is shelf-stable, unlike coconut, almond, and grape seed oils. Jojoba also creates an environment unsuitable for infection and fungus.

  • Apricot seed oil: This oil is rich in fatty acids and vitamins A C & E the three most important vitamins for combating free radicals in the skin from the effects of pollution and other environmental factors. It is full of antioxidants and is used in traditional Chinese medicine for inflammation, one of the primary reasons for skin distress and deterioration. As with Jojoba, apricot seed oil absorbs quickly into the skin, and it’s never greasy.

  • Avocado oil: This oil is packed with vitamins and other collagen-building amino acids. It will soothe and heal broken skin and increase epidermal elasticity for a firmer, more youthful appearance.

  • Rosehip seed oil: This is a superstar extract, rich with vitamins and will correct dark spots, reduce fine lines, treat eczema, and resolve scar tissue. It is anti-inflammatory and repairs the skin surface while restoring elasticity and protecting from environmental damage.

  • Pomegranate seed oil: Pomegranate is extremely high in Punicic acid which has been shown to significantly inhibit invasion of membranes by cancer cells. Although each of the critical fatty acids works synergistically in the pomegranate, which is why we use only the whole seed, punicic acid is the star is proven to have positive effects on several forms of cancer and all types of inflammation. Full of antioxidants that fight skin aging, this oil is also a potent source of Ellagic acid, another powerful anti-inflammatory.

  • Borage seed oil: This oil has the highest concentration of gamma-linolenic acid found anywhere in nature. It will improve or resolve eczema, atopic dermatitis, and psoriasis. It will also address inflammation acute or chronic and heal dry, scaly skin with one application. The oil treats skin injuries and environmental damage, and it plays a crucial role in restoring the intracellular moisture barrier, which is the reason behind dry and damaged skin.

  • Sea Buckthorn Seed Oil: This oil is a miracle oil for reversing wrinkles, smoothing and firming skin texture, and diminishing age spots. This oil is also an effective treatment for rosacea, irritation, sunburn, and more. It is packed with vitamin C and fatty acids; this oil is a transformative and healing gift. Only the seed should be used since the berry does not possess these qualities.

  • Hyaluronic acid: A natural component of young skin, hyaluronic acid acts as a sponge that holds moisture within your tissue. Replenishing hyaluronic acid helps plump and firm the skin and give it flexibility and strength. It also creates a smooth barrier as it draws moisture from the air and seals it in to create a silky hydrating finish.

  • Coleus Forskohlii: Coleus is an aromatic herb that is antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-magnetic, and anti-inflammatory. It inhibits the growth of skin pathogens and prevents infection. It is both milder and more effective than Tea tree oil.

Essential oils:

  • Lemon essential oil is the ultimate skin lightener and brighter, it also helps to tighten sagging skin, and it can even help regulate oil production.

  • Orange essential oil is an effective anti-aging oil that increases collagen and blood flow, also an excellent antiseptic for oily skin types.

  • Lemongrass essential oil is a natural antiseptic and astringent; it can be tolerated on all skin types; leaves skin more even, brighter and glowing.

  • Lavender essential oil is an all-around great pic for an essential oil to use on your skin. It is calming, gentle, and nourishing. Lavender oil can reduce the appearance of blemishes and give your skin a youthful glow. The oil can also help you if you are prone to skin irritation or sunburns.

  • Tea tree essential oil is nature’s little miracle. Use this remedy on bug bites or small breakouts. This oil is a natural anti-microbial, so it kills bacteria that could cause acne fungus and even dandruff.

  • Rose essential oil is a multi-purpose essential oil that can help nourish, hydrate, and heal your skin. Roses have been used for thousands of years to help moisturize and support the appearance of healthy, youthful-looking skin. Rose is the most valuable oil because it is distilled from the rose petal to release a delicate flower oil through steam gently.
Glass bottles to store your body oil: You´ve made your own face and body oil at home, so we need somewhere to store it. These small glass bottles work great as they can be cleaned and reused.
